How It All Works

I realised the other day, that the first time we went to the festy, we didnt know what the arena was, where to get these armband thingys, or anything else for that manner. I thought I should make a guide, with a rough, inaccurate map, to show how it all works. This is pretty much how it work however what I tell you could have changed this year as they are forever making minor changes. Also, I am speaking from a weekend campers point of view, as I have never been to the festival on a day ticket basis.

First of all, there are three parts to the festival site.

There are the campsites, there is the entrance to the arena, and there is the arena.

In the campsites you do all the stuff you'd imagine you'd do at a festival. You drink, you have parties, you socialise, you sleep, eat and smoke there. Now, this area is patrolled through the day by on the whole friendly security staff. The security staff used to stay within the safe confines of their towers after dark, but now they patrol all night and make sure no one is lighting bonfires (although small campfires are allowed). Drinking here is perfectly fine and legal, so dont hide the beer everytime you see a flouro jacket, but if you are seen with copius amounts of gange you might get apprehended.

The entrance to the arena really begins with the walk down there. You will know you are at the entrance to the arena when you go past the cashpoint, shower blocks, clothes stands and other general stuff. You will come to a metal fenced area with a big banner above it saying ARENA ENTRANCE. This is the place where you have to put out your joints and ditch your beers, because when you go through the gate you are not allowed anything. You will see a big barrier, with security guards along it. You now form orderly queues, and are searched by a security guard as you enter the arena. You cannot take any drinks in to the arena, and obviously no illegal substances are allowed in, but you can take in food for personal consumption, which is something I only realized last year when i read the small print. I will say that the searches are generally less stringent during the day than in the evening. When you get through these gates you are in the arena.

The arena is where all the action goes down. I would suggest you go have a walk around here on Thursday
(when it opens at around 6) to get yourself acquainted with the surroundings. You can also see the crew building the huge main stage, thats nice to watch if its a sunny evening. In the arena are all the stages where you'll see the bands/comedians, the funfair, everything you will be paying your money for.

Below is a basic rundown of what to do on arrival.
If you didnt know, Ill just explain that you go to the festival either on Wednesday, Thursday or (if you're unlucky) Friday (depending on when you bought your ticket and if you have an early entry ticket) if you are stopping for the weekend and. the first day of bands is a Friday. If you arrive on the Wednesday the gates open at 6pm (though I have heard sometimes they open earlier), Thursday, the gates open at 10am ish and Friday it's whenver the first bus is which is usually around 6am. This is so you can set up your camp and get to know your surroundings etc. The first thing you do when you arrive at the festival gates, is wind down the window of your car, and show an attendant your tickets if asked. This part is all very unstressful, and as long as you dont have big joints on the go, or cans of beer in hand, you wont be searched or anything like that. There are rumours that they are cracking down this year on drugs and bringing sniffer dogs in but as long your careful I see no need to worry. I only mention this part because this was the thing we were most stressed about the first time we went, getting our stash and beer confiscated at the entrance and wasting loadsa cash money. Follow the directions given to you by the security staff, and you will find yourself at the top end of a field, which is used for parking.
Map 1 - Carparks and campsite entry.

As i said at the start of this section, if things have changed this year its not my fault, i cant read the future. This is how things worked in 2006. First thing you do once you have parked the car/got to the entrance to the campsite is queue to get into the campsite (there are a few entrances to the campsites, as shown on the maps.). You will be asked to show your tickets as you go through the gates, and after you have been allowed in, you need to make your way to your chosen spot. Obviously, the closer you camp to the entrance, the less walking you have to do with all your stuff, however, when it comes to walking to and from the arena, its gonna be further. Swings and Roundabouts. Do your research before hand, decide how far you want to walk everyday to the arena, and go dump your stuff.
Now you are in your chosen spot, get your tents up, and sort out your camp. This means taping round the perimeter of your tents, saying hi to the neighbours, getting the tunes on, filling up water bottles etc etc. Now is the best time, a completely free day to explore if its your first time, to drink, smoke, and enjoy the atmosphere. Pray that the weather is sweet on the first day, who cares if it rains when you are watching bands, as long as you can chill in the sun on the first day.
At some point during thursday afternoon, you need to go and get your wristband. This is your ticket to the festival, and you cant do anything without it. So, go to one of the wristband points, and exchange your tickets for your wristbands. Generally speaking, the later in the day you leave it, the quieter the booths will be when you go.

The next thing you do is have a walk down to the arena. Now usually it opens at 6 ish, but dont hold me to that. Lets get something clear, because it can confuse some folks. You are not in the arena until you have gone through the gates which are staffed by security guards. Theres a big sign saying arena, which gives it away. before the arena entrance, is the place we call the PRE-ARENA. this is what confuses some people. Its the place where all the shops, stalls, help points, showers, cashpoints etc are.

As mentioned above, if its past say 6pm, the arena will probably be open and you can go look at the crew putting up the humongous main stage, check out some vids in the dance tent, check out the unsigned stage which usually has a few bands on or just soak up all the atmosphere in the arena. You cant miss it, but heres a final pic

Map 3

Just walk through the gates into the arena.
When you go through this choke point, you will be searched, depending on which security guard you get. No alcohol / drinks bottles / glass bottles / cans / illegal substances are to be brought into the arena, although apparantly food for personal consumption is permitted. This is a pretty thorough check, and bags especially will be checked. If you want to know how to smuggle a sly spliff in there are many suggestions to be found on the various leeds festival forums out there

So thats that. Youve arrived, set up camp, got your wristbands, and entered the arena for the first time. Now, its thursday night partytime. I wont explain what to do from here, cos this is the fun part, the unknown. You have however now got all the information you need to get set up and ready for the weekend with no stress and worry. Enjoy!
