Medical info

Thanks to our lovely Jimbo we now have a more up to date section on welfare and a few others and ends

Welfare:

Hello I am Jimbo, and I have been festivaling since I was quite, quite small. I now work and play at about six each year! For those hardened yearly visitors this might all be ‘old hat' but for the vet's* out there read on!

Preparation
Festivals are huge fun (well I think so) but there are some little things you should be considering to keep you safe. Preparation is the key, and with the excitement START NOW! If you have not already look at the “pack if you can” and “Essentials” pages. Take only what you can afford to loose! Leave those posh expensive items at home. Consider taking an old mobile not that new N95 you just paid £500 for! Keep a record of card numbers and how to cancel them should they go astray.

Medications and First Aid
If you need or are likely to need any of this then get sorted at least the week before to allow prescriptions to be sorted by your family GP. Are you likely to suffer hay fever or asthma in the hot dust and high pollen? Get those anti-histamines or inhalers arranged! Ladies plan ahead for any girly needs, and boys, your not to posh to wash!

Basic first-aid should be able to be treated with common sense and a simple supply of plasters and clean water. Medical assistance is available on site (and is far superior to Reading!) this can be sought out by visiting the Medical Centre/Field Hospital which is just after the campsites on the way to the arena. (New this year is full X-Ray on-site!) Here is also the drop off for the insulin fridge. For real Emergencies speak to the nearest fire-tower, ambulance or security/steward person or call 999.

Behaviour
In the past there have been disturbances at Leeds, this is not surprising considering the numbers of people who attend. Just look at your average Saturday night out on the town and actually it's a safe place to be. Remember the law is just as enforceable at Leeds as it is elsewhere. Drunk and Disorderly, Breach of the Peace, Criminal Damage, Possession of Drugs and Driving under the influence may all end up with you being handed over the police. The site makes extensive use of CCTV which can be seen by all agencies and is recorded – you have been warned!

Water
Remember to drink lots of non-alcoholic drinks (as well as getting plastered!) Free water is available at the stand-pipes around the camp-site and arena but remember that only small SEALED water bottles will be allowed through the arena gates so have a new one each time you enter if going in for the day.

Drink and Drugs
Festivals are not the place to experiment (I know you've heard it before) but a paranoid trip in a loud un-usual environment is not a happy place to be and can mess you up for life. Drink responsibly and look out for yourself first and everyone else second.

Fun
Go have some!

Gas Canisters
BEWARE. The number of incidents that we attend due to burns caused by people not knowing how to connect the gas canister to the actual device is just far too many. Please read the instructions before you attempt to change the cylinder it may save you alot of pain and possibly missing the festival.

Water
Make sure that you keep yourself tanked up with water. Your hangover will not be quite as bad as you will not be so dehydrated. If the weather is good and your dancing for England, you need the water to keep on dancing if not you will end up being dehydrated which in turn will lead to sun stroke or heat exhaustion and you may become unconscious - not good.

Sun Block
Don't forget this one. If the weather is good, you will be very sore if you do - as well as feeling crap if you get sun stroke.

The best bit of advice I can offer is to look after yourself and your mates.

If you need first aid contact the watch towers on the campsite or campsite control on red campsite. The stewards will radio their control to request assistance from medical control. If your just after some advice just stop one of the ambulances or bike teams and ask.
